About

Who can sign up for Carolina Away?

Carolina Away is a set of undergraduate courses specifically designed for students who are facing extraordinary challenges in their ability to return to an in-person, residential experience for Fall 2021. These courses may be a great option for undergraduate international students facing obstacles to travel or receiving their visas, as well as incoming or continuing  undergraduate students who face obstacles in returning to campus this fall.

For students who are planning their fall classes who may feel expanded access to online courses would be essential to their ability to continue to make progress toward their degree, please consult the “Fall Resources/Online Options” tile on your ConnectCarolina student home page. Here you will find more information on resources, including an inquiry form if you need more directed assistance based on your circumstances.

If I am a current Carolina Away student; can I automatically continue my participation in the program or do I need to take additional action?

Current Carolina Away students will need to take additional action to review eligibility for the 2021-22 academic year. As with other students applying, a team will evaluate individual circumstances and decide whether admission into Carolina Away or some other strategy of accommodation would work best for your personal situation and learning objectives.

Besides online courses, what additional support and programming does Carolina Away offer?

Through Carolina Away, you’ll have the opportunity to build relationships with other Tar Heels while diving into your classes. A team of Carolina Away student ambassadors, in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and staff, are developing both social events and co-curricular programs to learn about and participate in student-led organizations and clubs. In addition, you’ll have guidance from an advising team that takes into account the needs of remote-learning students.

Is this an appropriate option for new global students?

We believe that Carolina Away continues to be a good option for international undergraduate students to both start and extend your Carolina journey. Some admitted students will not be able to enter the United States in time for the start of the fall semester given the U.S. State Department’s suspension of visa services as well as travel restrictions. In addition, if you are an international student transferring from another institution within the United States, you may have additional considerations when deciding if Carolina Away is the best option for you. UNC’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is happy to provide additional information and help you determine if Carolina Away is right for you.

Are there special course requirements to take for Carolina Away students?

No, Carolina Away students have no additional requirements. While they are encouraged to consider the social programming and other opportunities, these are entirely voluntary.

If I am not enrolled in Carolina Away, can I participate in the student programs and social activities?

Yes! The Carolina Away team is excited to include students who find themselves in circumstances that would benefit from the opportunity to join Carolina Away’s online community in 2021-2022. Carolina Away Student Ambassadors are planning watch parties for Carolina athletics, movie nights, game nights and opportunities to meet with clubs and social organizations. For further information, please contact the student ambassadors at carolinaaway@unc.edu.
